About Raffaello

Raffaello D'Andrea is the founder of Verity, the Zurich company he started in 2014 to build autonomous indoor drones for warehouse inventory. He is also Professor of Dynamic Systems and Control at ETH Zurich, where he founded the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control and has taught since 2008.

Before ETH he spent about ten years on the faculty of Cornell University. There he co-founded the Systems Engineering programme and led the university's robot soccer team to four RoboCup world championships. In 2003 he co-founded Kiva Systems with Mick Mountz and Peter Wurman and was responsible for its system architecture, robot design and navigation. Amazon acquired Kiva in 2012 and renamed it Amazon Robotics. In 2013 he co-founded ROBO Global.

D'Andrea studied engineering science at the University of Toronto and earned his PhD in electrical engineering at Caltech in 1997. He is named as inventor on more than 40 US patents. He was elected an international member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2020, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2022 and into the Logistics Hall of Fame in 2024. Earlier honours include the IEEE Robotics and Automation Award in 2016.
