Menna El-Assady

About Menna

Menna El-Assady is a tenure-track assistant professor of computer science at ETH Zurich, appointed in 2023, where she leads the Interactive Visualization and Intelligence Augmentation (IVIA) lab. Her research deals with how people and AI systems work together, especially through visual analytics and explainable AI.

Before her professorship she was an independent research fellow at the ETH AI Center from 2021. She had previously been a research associate at the University of Konstanz, where she led a subgroup of doctoral researchers, and at Ontario Tech University in Canada.

She studied information engineering at Konstanz and completed her PhD there in 2023 with a thesis on levels of explainability for human-AI interaction in visual text analytics. The thesis won the GI Dissertation Award in 2024. In the same year she received the IEEE VIS Significant New Researcher Award, after the EuroVis Early Career Award in 2023. She co-founded the VIS4DH and VISxAI workshop series at IEEE VIS.
