Daniel Bloch

Daniel Bloch is co-founder and CFO of Iron Energy, a Zurich-based ETH spin-off founded in 2024 that stores energy in iron. Its technology uses a reversible reaction between hydrogen and iron oxide, which the company says can cut storage costs by up to 90 percent. A pilot plant has been running on the ETH Hönggerberg campus since 2023.

Bloch founded the company with CEO Samuel Heiniger; Wendelin Stark and Robert Grass of ETH Zurich act as advisers. In 2025 Iron Energy won CHF 150,000 at Venture Kick and signed its first customer, the data centre operator NTS Colocation, which plans a 3 GWh high-temperature iron-air battery in Bern by 2028.

Bloch studied at the University of St. Gallen and wrote his master's thesis on Iron Energy.
