About Alessandro

Alessandro Curioni is an IBM Fellow, vice president for IBM Research Europe and Africa and director of IBM Research Europe in Zurich, which he has led since 2015. He is responsible for IBM's corporate research in Europe and directs the company's global research strategy in accelerated discovery and security.

He first came to the Zurich lab in 1993 as a PhD student and joined as a research staff member in 1998. He later became founding manager of its department for cognitive computing and computational sciences and was named IBM Fellow in 2014. His work in high-performance computing and computational science has been applied in healthcare, aerospace, consumer goods and electronics, and he was part of the teams that won the Gordon Bell Prize in 2013 and 2015. His work focuses on accelerating scientific discovery with AI, quantum computing and new computing paradigms such as neuromorphic computing.

Curioni studied theoretical chemistry and earned his PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He is a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) and leads its topical platform on artificial intelligence.
