
About Alek
Alek Tarkowski is Director of Strategy at Open Future, a European think tank he co-founded with Paul Keller. It launched in 2021 and works on the digital commons, openness and public interest rules for the digital economy, including public AI.
A sociologist with a PhD from the Polish Academy of Sciences, he has spent around 20 years on advocacy and research about culture, society and digital technology. In 2010 he founded Centrum Cyfrowe in Warsaw and led it for a decade. He also co-founded Creative Commons Poland and COMMUNIA, the European association for the public domain. Copyright reform has been one of his themes since 2015.
From 2008 to 2011 he sat on the Board of Strategic Advisors to the Polish Prime Minister and co-wrote the report "Poland 2030". He served on the board of Creative Commons from 2021 to 2024 and is on the board of Wikimedia Europe.
