Novartis is a pharmaceutical company based in Basel that describes itself as an innovative medicines company. It was formed in 1996 through the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. Since then it has spun off its eye care business Alcon, in 2019, and its generics business Sandoz, in 2023.
Its work concentrates on four core therapeutic areas: cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, immunology, neuroscience and oncology. Its technology platforms include chemistry, biotherapeutics, xRNA, radioligand therapy and gene and cell therapy. In 2025 Novartis reported net sales of USD 54.5 billion.
The company's headquarters are on the Novartis Campus in Basel. Its shares are listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and, as American depositary receipts, on the New York Stock Exchange.
