Balgrist University Hospital

Balgrist University Hospital (Universitätsklinik Balgrist) in Zurich specialises in disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Its departments include orthopaedics, paraplegiology, radiology, anaesthesiology, rheumatology, physical medicine and chiropractic medicine.

The hospital is run by the Balgrist Association (Schweizerischer Verein Balgrist), a non-profit association founded in 1909. The clinic opened in 1912 and has been the orthopaedic university clinic of the University of Zurich since 1945. In 1990 the Swiss Paraplegic Centre at Balgrist was added. In 2025 the hospital recorded 7,868 inpatient discharges and around 157,500 outpatient consultations.

Research and innovation take place at Balgrist Campus, a research facility for musculoskeletal medicine opened in 2015, and at OR-X, a teaching and research centre with a fully equipped operating theatre, opened in 2023. Through Balgrist Beteiligungs AG the hospital supports early-stage startups.
