Professor of Macroeconomics and Co-Director of KOF at ETH Zurich

About Prof.

Hans Gersbach is Professor of Macroeconomics: Innovation and Policy at ETH Zurich and Co-Director of the KOF Swiss Economic Institute. He has held the chair since 2006. In January 2023 he joined the KOF directorate, where he focuses on the institute's methods and oversees its KOF Lab division.

Gersbach studied mathematics, actuarial science and economics at the University of Basel, where he also completed his doctorate and habilitation. From 1995 to 2006 he was a professor at the University of Heidelberg. Earlier, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and as a research fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute. In 2012 he was a visiting professor at Princeton's Bendheim Center for Finance.

His research covers macroeconomic models, monetary architecture, innovation, climate policy and the design of collective decisions. His work on long-term climate treaties with a refunding club received the 2021 award for outstanding publication of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. In 2017 he won the Science Prize of the City of Basel. He sits on the scientific advisory board of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, which he has also chaired.
